Under the leadership of President Rodrigo Duterte, the Filipinos now matters in Asia despite the fact that he has courted all manner of controversy. The Philippines and the entire Filipino communities now matters in Asia according to Alex Lo of South China Morning Post (SCMP), one of Asia’s most reliable news media organization.

Veteran journalist Alex Lo stated on his post that President Rody Duterte is making everyone sit up and take notice of how he managed the Philippines that even tiny but progressive Hong Kong took notice.

SCMP posted that for the past few years many people in Hong Kong look down on Filipinos but today, no local government official in Hong Kong could treat President Duterte compared to how they treated former Pres. Aquino. Pres Duterte who will be on a state visit to China is making a difference in Asia but big and small.

Pres. Duterte was acknowledged as the one who has redefined the Philippines’ pivotal role in the rivalry between China and the US in the region.

One of the popular contributions of the Duterte administration during his first 100 days is when they forced the Hong Kong government to unilaterally forced a new condition in the contracts of Filipino helpers that bars them from having to clean the exterior of windows. The agreement between Philippines and Hong Kong started after several maids fell to their deaths while cleaning windows in the past few months.

Aside from President Duterte’s achievement and help in Hong Kong although it was not reported on various news agency in the Philippines, the 71-year-old President from Mindanao is also pushing Beijing to let about 200,000 Filipinos who are currently working illegally as domestic helpers on the mainland to be granted legal status.
